About Inle Lake
The Inle lake is one of the chief tourist attractions of Northern Myanmar. Inle means ‘small lake’, implying that there is a larger lake. It is the second largest lake in Myanmar, the largest being Indawgyi. Roughly speaking ,it is about eight miles long and three miles broad. It lies over 2900 ft. above sea level and is surrounded by mountains. Hence, you can imagine bow beautiful it will be.
Tourists visit Bagan to study its ancient pagodas that constitute architectural and artistic wonders. But they go to Inle to enjoy peace, quiet, fine weather and natural beauty. There must be few places indeed that can beat inle in providing rest and recreation to travel-weary tourists. Life is leisurely there and time doesn’t fly, but crawls! Speed boating across a vast, clear and calm expanse of water among blue, mountain ranges itself is thrilling experience rarely encountered in humdrum city life. The inle region teems with exotic sights and experiences.
An afternoon at the bungalow-above-the-water will sweep away your cares and worries for the duration of your stay in the region. One sight that will rivet your attention is a leg-rower, the most famous and unique feature of Inlay. Another unique sight is that of floating islands made up of compost and silt.
The enterprising lake-dwellers called Inthars use them as beds for vegetables and flowers. All visitors to the region are also fascinated by its famous hand-loom industry and its beautiful products. Another unusual attraction of Inlay is its floating markets. One special attraction of the region for Buddhists is the Phaungdaw Oo Pagoda where five ancient images of the Buddha reside.
The Inthars reverse the images so much that they have gilded them over and over until thy now appears to be balls of gold! The lake is especially crowded with visitors when the festival of the Pagoda is held in October featuring spectacular boat races. The pagoda is the most famous one in Northern Myanmar and Inlay is one of the regions where Buddhism flourishes to great heights. Consequently, you can find grand monasteries there with a large number of monks and novices studying and practicing Dharma-the Doctrine-in them.
